Waves break when depth drops to about 1.3x wave height. Period sets speed, bathymetry bends the energy, and bottom slope decides whether you get a spilling roller or a barrel.

Walking in dry sand costs 2.1 to 2.7 times the energy of a hard surface, and heat adaptation takes 7 to 14 days. Maintain rather than progress: three 20-minute sessions before 9am is enough.

California's best surf, by skill: Doheny and Tourmaline for beginners, San Onofre and Huntington for intermediates, Rincon, Lower Trestles and Steamer Lane for experienced surfers.

Spain's quietest coasts: Bolonia, Cabo de Gata, Calblanque, the Ebro Delta, Costa da Morte, Torimbia and car-free La Graciosa. Four now cap summer parking or run shuttle buses.

Spain beach safety in plain terms: red flag means no swimming and can be fined, purple means jellyfish, lifeguards typically cover 11:00-20:00 mid-June to mid-September, emergencies dial 112.

Spain's real eco-tourism beaches are the Cies Islands, La Graciosa, Cabo de Gata, Menorca, Formentera, the Ebro Delta and El Hierro - all capped by permit or vehicle quota.

Spain's best underwater sites are the Medes Islands, Cabo de Palos, Cabo de Gata, Tabarca, Lanzarote's Museo Atlantico, El Hierro's Mar de las Calmas, Mallorca's El Toro and Menorca's Isla del Aire.

Solo beach travel in Spain works best in San Sebastian, Valencia, Cadiz, Tarifa, Sitges and Las Palmas: walkable beach cities where eating alone is normal and dorms run €25-40.

The best time to visit Spain's beaches is early June or late September, when the Mediterranean holds 22-26°C without August's crowds. The Canaries swim year-round at 19-24°C.

Spain has 677 Blue Flag beaches. Red-flag swimming risks fines up to €3,000, Barcelona bans beach smoking, and swimwear off the sand costs €120–750. Go June or September.

Spain's most romantic beach getaways: Cadaqués, Deià, Cala Macarella, Ses Illetes, Playa del Silencio, Bolonia and Maro. Go in September, and expect steps, ferries or a shuttle.

Spain's beach festivals run June to August: San Juan bonfires on 23 June, Virgen del Carmen sea processions on 16 July, Villajoyosa's pre-dawn landing and Sanlúcar's races on sand.

Spain's wildlife coast is eight sites: Doñana, the Ebro Delta, Cabo de Gata, the Strait of Gibraltar, Tenerife–La Gomera, the Cíes, Ibiza's seagrass and the new turtle beaches.

Spain's surf is northern and autumn-to-spring: Mundaka, Rodiles, Pantín, Somo, Zarautz. The kiting is Tarifa, near year-round. Only Famara and El Médano give you both at once.

Spain's historic beach towns worth the trip: Cádiz, Tarragona, Tossa de Mar, Peñíscola, Ibiza Town, Baiona and Hondarribia — each with real walls and a walkable beach.

The best family-friendly beaches in Spain: Playa de Muro, Salou, Benidorm's Levante, La Malvarrosa, the Mar Menor at Los Alcazares and La Concha. Five shelve gently; only La Concha has a real tide.

Beach hopping in Spain works car-free on two coasts: the Cercanias C-1 runs Malaga to Fuengirola in 46 minutes, and the Alicante tram reaches Denia. The Costa Brava still needs a car.

From Costa Brava to Costa del Sol, Spain's six Mediterranean costas are not interchangeable: Costa Brava has the coves and warmest August water, Cabo de Gata the wildest sand, Malaga the flights.

Mexico low season runs May to mid-December. The Pacific — Puerto Escondido, Huatulco — is the real bargain; Caribbean beaches get sargassum. September is cheapest and riskiest.
