About Punta del Este
Punta del Este is where wealthy Argentinians and Brazilians go when European beach towns feel too far away. This Uruguayan peninsula splits the calm Rio de la Plata from the wilder Atlantic, giving you the rare option of choosing your ocean mood — the Mansa side for flat-water swimming with kids, the Brava side for surf and that famous giant hand sculpture emerging from the sand. In peak season (December through February), the population swells from 10,000 to over 300,000, and the restaurant scene rivals Buenos Aires: wood-fired parrillas, Uruguayan tannat wine, fresh-caught lenguado. Off-season, prices drop dramatically and you get the wide beaches nearly to yourself. The sunset strip along Rambla Artigas, with its mix of modernist architecture and fishing boats, is one of the most photogenic coastal drives in South America.
