About Outer Banks
The Outer Banks is a 200-mile chain of barrier islands off North Carolina that feels more remote than it has any right to, given that it's a day's drive from half the East Coast. The beaches here aren't manicured resort strips — they're wide, windswept, and backed by dunes and sea oats. Corolla has wild horses descended from Spanish mustangs that just wander the beach. Cape Hatteras is a surfer's paradise with some of the best breaks on the Atlantic seaboard. The Wright Brothers launched the first powered flight from Kill Devil Hills, and the monument there is genuinely moving. Jockey's Ridge State Park has the tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast, perfect for hang gliding. Fish tacos and shrimp burgers at a roadside stand will run you under $12. It's the anti-resort beach vacation, and it's better for it.
