About Lombok
Lombok is what Bali was twenty years ago — that's the cliche, but there's truth in it. Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Bali's Kuta) has a string of beaches along the south coast that are genuinely stunning: Tanjung Aan with its pepper-grain sand, Mawun Beach in a perfect semicircle framed by green hills, and Selong Belanak where beginners learn to surf on gentle whitewash for about 100,000 rupiah (6 USD) per lesson. The Gili Islands — Trawangan, Meno, and Air — sit off the northwest coast, each with its own personality (party, honeymoon, and chill, respectively). Serious trekkers come for Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, where a three-day summit climb rewards you with a crater lake at sunrise. Rooms in Kuta Lombok start around 200,000 rupiah (12 USD) a night, and a warung meal of ayam bakar with rice and sambal costs about 25,000 rupiah.
