About Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is not one reef but nearly 3,000 individual reef systems and hundreds of islands spread across an area roughly the size of Italy. Cairns and Port Douglas are the main gateways, and from either town you can be snorkeling over coral gardens within ninety minutes by boat. The colors underwater are genuinely shocking the first time, neon corals, parrotfish like swimming jewels, reef sharks cruising the drop-offs. A liveaboard trip to the outer reef is the gold standard, with three-day trips starting around $700 AUD. For something more accessible, Green Island and Fitzroy Island offer day-trip snorkeling from Cairns. The Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest on earth, meets the reef just north of Port Douglas, creating one of the only places where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites sit side by side.
