Alexandria Bay is a 400-meter stretch of golden sand hemmed in by rocky headlands and dense vegetation. The water is warm (22-27°C depending on season), the waves moderate, and the setting completely undeveloped. It is often described as a nude beach, but Queensland is the only mainland state with no legally designated nude beaches, so nudity here has no legal protection and you can be asked to cover up or fined.

There are no facilities at Alexandria Bay. No water, no toilets, no shade structures. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person, especially in summer. The walk back is uphill and fully exposed to the sun for the first half.

Western Australia

Swanbourne Beach, Perth

Swanbourne Beach stretches along Perth's metropolitan coastline between Cottesloe and City Beach, about 15 minutes from the CBD by car. The clothing-optional section occupies the central portion of the beach, roughly between the two sets of access stairs.

The Beach

Wide, white sand and Indian Ocean surf characterize Swanbourne. The water is warm by Australian standards (20-24°C in summer) and the waves are generally moderate. How the Designation System Works

New South Wales: several beaches are legally designated, including Lady Bay, Cobblers, Obelisk, Werrong, Samurai, Birdie and Armands.

Victoria: three legal clothing-optional beaches: Sunnyside North, Point Impossible and Southside.

South Australia: Maslin Beach is designated, and was Australia's first official nude beach in 1975.

Western Australia: legal nude beaches include North Swanbourne, Warnbro, Mauritius Beach, East Pretty Pool and Ten Mile Lagoon.
