Sandy Bay, Cape Town
Sandy Bay sits on the west side of the Karbonkelberg, just south of Llandudno, and cannot be seen from the coastal road to Hout Bay, which turns inland above Llandudno. There is no vehicle access. The usual route is the footpath from the small car park at the southern end of Llandudno, a walk of roughly 15 to 20 minutes over sand and rock. Parking at Llandudno is limited, so arrive early on summer weekends or expect a longer walk.
It is a wild beach: white sand, granite boulders, no facilities, no vendors and no lifeguards. Bring water, food and sun protection, and keep to the path through the fynbos. The Atlantic here is cold because of the Benguela upwelling, often 11 to 15°C even in summer, so most people swim briefly or not at all. Swells and rip currents can be strong. The beach draws a mix of Capetonians and international visitors, and it is the best-known nude beach in the country.
Mpenjati, KwaZulu-Natal South Coast
The Mpenjati Nature Reserve is a 66-hectare reserve at the mouth of the Mpenjati River, about 20 km south of Margate, between Trafalgar to the north and Palm Beach to the south. It is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and has picnic sites on both banks of the river with braai facilities and toilets.
The Hibiscus Coast Municipality (since merged into Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality) proclaimed part of the beach a nudist beach in October 2014, which made it the first official one in South Africa. That status did not last: in November 2017 the Public Protector found the proclamation procedurally flawed. Naturists continue to use the beach, but there is no formal protection, so be discreet, stay well away from the family picnic areas and cover up if asked.

Beaches are governed by municipal by-laws and, inside protected areas, by the conservation authority's rules. In practice, nude sunbathing at Sandy Bay and Mpenjati is tolerated rather than authorized. The national law that does apply is the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act of 2007: section 9 makes it an offence to unlawfully and intentionally expose your genitals to an adult without their consent, and section 22 covers exposure to children. That is why nudity is only workable where everyone present expects it. Stay inside the traditional area, cover up when families or children are nearby, and cover up if a ranger, officer or other beachgoer objects.
