The Reality of Naturism in Jamaica

Jamaica has no public nude beaches, and indecent exposure in a public place is an offence. What it does have is one of the Caribbean's longest-running adults-only clothing-optional resort scenes, inside private resorts in Negril and Ocho Rios. Hedonism II in Negril has carried that name since 1981, and three of the four Couples resorts have designated "au naturel" areas. Outside the gates of those resorts, Jamaica's beaches are swimsuit-only.

This guide covers which resorts actually allow nudity and where, what the law says, and the nearest alternatives for travelers who want a public naturist beach rather than a private resort.

Why Jamaica's Naturism Is Resort-Only

Jamaica's public-order law is old and blunt. Under the Towns and Communities Act, anyone who "in any thoroughfare or public place, indecently expose[s] his or her person" commits an offence. The Act sets a fine, allows up to 30 days in prison for a repeat conviction, and lets a constable arrest without a warrant anyone seen committing the offence. Public beaches are family places, and the culture is broadly Christian and conservative.

The resorts work differently because they are private property. Nudity is confined to screened beach sections, pools and islands inside the resort grounds, out of public view, and each resort enforces its own house rules about where and when guests may be nude.

The Resorts That Allow Nudity

Hedonism II (Negril)

Hedonism II sits on 22 acres at the northern end of Negril's beach in Westmoreland. It opened in 1976 as Negril Beach Village and was renamed Hedonism II in 1981; SuperClubs sold it in 2013 to Marshmallow Ltd., a group headed by financier Harry Lange. Its sister resort, Hedonism III in Runaway Bay, closed in 2011.

The resort has a clothing-optional side and a clothed side, each with its own beach and pool. According to the resort's FAQ, guests must be at least 18, the minimum stay is three nights, clothing is required in the restaurants, and once you are on the nude beach or at the nude pool you are expected to be nude. It describes itself as "lifestyle friendly," meaning swingers are welcome, and day and night passes are sold when occupancy allows. If you want traditional, non-sexual naturism, a Couples resort is the better fit.

Couples Negril

Couples runs four all-inclusive resorts for couples in Jamaica, and the rules on nudity differ by resort. According to the Couples FAQ, Couples Negril has a small, semi-private beach area designated for "au naturel" sunbathing just off the main beach. The minimum age is 18.

Couples Swept Away (Negril): Not Clothing-Optional

Couples Swept Away, also on Negril's Seven Mile Beach, does not permit au naturel sunbathing anywhere on the property, according to the same FAQ. Book Couples Negril instead if nudity matters to you.

Couples Tower Isle (Ocho Rios)

Couples Tower Isle on the north coast has a small private au naturel island just offshore, reached by a short boat ride from the resort. The island has a pool with a swim-up bar and is open for nude sunbathing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Couples Sans Souci (Ocho Rios)

Couples Sans Souci, near Ocho Rios, has Sunset Beach, a section set aside for au naturel sunbathing with its own pool, hot tub, bar and grill. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from September to March, and to 5:30 p.m. from April to August.

The Public Beaches: Swimsuits Only

Negril Seven Mile Beach and Bloody Bay

Negril's Seven Mile Beach and Bloody Bay to the north are lined with hotels, bars and water-sports concessions. Outside the screened au naturel areas of the resorts above, these beaches are swimsuit-only, and topless sunbathing in public view is likely to draw complaints.

Treasure Beach and the South Coast

The south coast around Treasure Beach in St. Elizabeth is the quietest tourism area in Jamaica, with fishing villages and small guesthouses. The community is conservative and there is no naturist tradition. St. Elizabeth was also one of the parishes worst hit by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 (see below), so confirm that your accommodation has reopened before booking.

The Legal Framework

The Towns and Communities Act makes indecent exposure in a thoroughfare or public place an offence, with a fine, up to 30 days in prison for repeat convictions, and arrest without a warrant. Nothing in the law carves out topless sunbathing, and it is not part of local beach culture, so do not assume it is acceptable on a public beach. Inside the resorts, nudity is limited to the areas each resort designates, and staff enforce those boundaries.

The Alternatives: Public Naturist Beaches

For a public clothing-optional beach rather than a private resort, you need to leave Jamaica. The realistic option in the Caribbean is on a French island.

Orient Bay, Saint-Martin

Orient Bay on the French side of Saint Martin has the Caribbean's best-known clothing-optional beach section, at the southern end of the bay. The naturist resort that anchored it, Club Orient, was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017, and ground was broken on a replacement naturist resort in June 2026, with opening expected in two to three years. There are no nonstop flights from Jamaica, so plan on a connection.

Antigua's Eden Beach

Eden Beach, the fourth cove at Hawksbill on Antigua, has long been an informally tolerated nude beach, although Antigua has no legal nude beaches. The Hawksbill resort beside it is not currently operating (its website shows only a "launching soon" page), so check how the beach can be reached before planning around it. Practical Tips for Naturists Visiting Jamaica

Pick the Right Resort

Hedonism II is a party resort that welcomes swingers and singles. Couples Negril, Couples Tower Isle and Couples Sans Souci are couples-only resorts with designated au naturel areas and a quieter, non-sexual atmosphere. Couples Swept Away has no au naturel area at all. Decide which fits the trip before booking, because the difference is large.

Check the Rules Before You Book

Nude areas, opening hours and age limits are set by each resort and can change. Read the current FAQ on the resort's own website, or ask the resort directly, before you pay.

Getting Around

The drive from Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay to Negril takes about an hour and a half, and Negril to Ocho Rios is around three hours by road. If you want both a Negril resort and an Ocho Rios resort, split the stay rather than planning day trips between them.

When to Visit

December to April is the drier season, with the most reliable weather and the highest prices. May, June and November are quieter shoulder months. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 storm near New Hope in Westmoreland, the parish that includes Negril, and damaged an estimated 40 to 50 percent of Jamaica's hotels. Both Couples and Hedonism II are taking bookings for 2026, but check the current status of any property, and buy travel insurance that covers named storms for August to October trips.

Final Thoughts

Jamaica has no public naturist tradition, but it has some of the Caribbean's longest-running clothing-optional resorts. For a private, all-inclusive naturist holiday, Hedonism II or one of the three Couples resorts with au naturel areas is the choice, provided you pick the right one: Couples Swept Away does not allow nudity.
