About Tonga

Tonga is one of the few places left where you can legally swim with humpback whales. Every year from July to October, these massive animals migrate from Antarctica to the warm, sheltered waters of Vava'u and Ha'apai to calve and mate, and licensed operators take small groups into the water for encounters that redefine what you thought was possible in the ocean. Beyond the whales, Tonga is the South Pacific as it used to be: the Ha'apai island group is a scattering of low coral islands with empty white beaches, zero resorts, and some of the clearest water in the Pacific. The Tongan people are famously generous, Sunday feasts are a serious cultural institution, and the pace of island life here makes even laid-back Samoa feel rushed. Guesthouses in Vava'u run about $40-70 USD, and a whale swim excursion costs around $200 for an experience you'll talk about for the rest of your life.

  • 1Swim with humpback whale mothers and calves in Vava'u waters

  • 3Snorkel the pristine reefs around Pangaimotu Island
  • 4Attend a traditional Tongan Sunday feast with roasted pig and root crops
