About Nosy Be

Nosy Be sits off Madagascar's northwest coast like a fragment of paradise that broke away from the mainland and decided to do its own thing. The island is draped in ylang-ylang and vanilla plantations that perfume the air, while the surrounding archipelago, especially Nosy Iranja and Nosy Tanikely, delivers some of the most pristine snorkeling in the Indian Ocean. Lemurs still roam the Lokobe Nature Reserve, a pocket of primary rainforest you can visit with local guides for around $25 USD. The beaches here don't look real: Nosy Iranja's sandbar connects two islands at low tide and disappears completely when the water rises. Accommodation ranges from $15 bungalows to upscale eco-lodges, and a dinner of freshly caught zebu steak with coconut rice at a local hotely costs about $4. The diving around the crater lakes and offshore islets is world-class and remarkably uncrowded.
