About Palawan
Palawan has been voted the world's best island by travel magazines so many times it's almost cliche at this point — but then you see the Big Lagoon in El Nido for the first time and understand why. Towering limestone karsts rise straight out of water so clear you can count fish from the boat. The island-hopping tours (labeled A through D, each hitting different spots) are the main activity, and Tour A — Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Shimizu Island — is the one everyone talks about. Coron, in northern Palawan, offers a completely different experience: Japanese WWII shipwrecks you can dive and snorkel, plus volcanic lakes like Kayangan surrounded by jagged limestone. Between El Nido and Coron, the expedition boats make multi-day trips through deserted islands. A beachfront cottage in El Nido runs 1,500-3,000 pesos a night (25-55 USD), and a full island-hopping tour with lunch costs about 1,500 pesos.
