Barbados is the Caribbean island that doesn't have to choose between chill and interesting. The west coast — the so-called Platinum Coast — has calm, gin-clear water and the kind of sunsets that make you put your phone down. Flip to the east coast and you've got Bathsheba's soup-bowl waves drawing surfers from everywhere. In between, there are rum distilleries older than most countries, Friday-night fish fries in Oistins where a plate of marlin and macaroni pie costs under $10, and cricket matches that double as all-day parties. The locals call themselves Bajans, and they're genuinely proud of this island — which tells you something.
